Interview with a Gardner

Interviewee: Emmanuel Addo
Question: What fruit or vegetables do you grow?
Response: Eggplant, tomatoes, okra, bell peppers and hot peppers are grown (this season).
Question: When do you usually plant them?
Response: Usually mid to late May.
Question: What kind of preparation do you do before planting?
Response: Clear the weeds by cutting them with shears. Also I till the ground also known as plowing. Plowing usually involves using a bigger machine; however, the tool used for tilling is a garden hoe.

Question: Do you use any fertilizer or chemicals?
Response: No fertilizer or chemicals are used, instead crops are rotated. Rotation allows one to use the same plot for years to come.
• Even in Ghana, crop rotation helps maintain same piece of land.
• There are different types of soils with various contents. The pH (hydrogen ion content in any substance) of the soils varies. For example, there is clay soil, sandy and humus soil and each plant being planted require certain elements; therefore, there are different vitamins in different soils.
• As a result some plants may have more Calcium, potassium, etc.
Question: What prompted you to start your own garden?
Response: “I’ve always enjoyed working on the land, because I grew up in the country.
• As a child I farmed with my parents and siblings. My parents were farmers.
• Plus when you garden you get fresh produces, and I also enjoy the exercise that comes with working the land.”
Question: Do you share the produces with others?
Response: Yes, with family and friends.
Question: How long have you been gardening?
Response: Well in the house I live in now about 6 out of the 12 years since moving in.
Question: Is this something you want to continue to do for a while?
Response: “Yes, [there is] a joy derived in seeing the plants grow and bear fruits. Also it supplements vitamins for my family.”
Question: How do you feel after your produces have come to full term and ready to be harvested?
Response: “Filled with joy and pleasure that my family will get fresh produces to enjoy.”
