Baked Ziti 2-28-12
For my Grandmother's bday I told her I would cook dinner, and sent her several recipes options to choose from. She picked Baked Ziti (which I kind of thought she would because I know my Grandmother well). I got the flu on the day I was supposed to make it, her actual bday, so it wasn't until this week that I could make it. I cooked it the night before because I knew it would take awhile, and my Mom begged me for a piece!!
Ingredients: 1 lb. dry ziti pasta; 1 onion, chopped; 1 lb Italian sausage (or ground beef, I used Italian); 2t. minced garlic; 2t Italian seasonings; 2 (26oz) jars spaghetti sauce (I used one garlic and onion and one sausage and tomato); 6 oz provolone cheese, sliced (9 rounds); 1 1/2 c. sour cream; 8 oz mozzarella cheese, shredded; grated Parmesan.
Directions: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add ziti pasta, and cook until al dente, about 8 mins; drain. In a large skillet, brown onion and sausage over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook for a minute or so. Add spaghetti sauce and Italian seasonings, and simmer 15 mins. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9x13" baking dish. Layer as follows: 1/2 of the ziti, 1/2 sauce mix, provolone cheese, sour cream, remaining ziti, remaining sauce, and then mozzarella cheese. Top w/ grated Parmesan cheese. Bake for 30 mins in the preheated oven, or until cheeses are melted. You may want to cover it the first 20 mins w/ foil, then let the cheese melt and brown for the last 10 mins.
Enjoy!
