It all started in a waiting room. Somewhere.
I was reading a magazine when I discovered an article showing this woman making these delightful--and delicious--looking calzones. From leftovers! Always on the lookout for interesting things to do with leftovers, I was intrigued. She made it look so easy. Just throw all your leftovers in some dough and voila! Calzones!
I had to try it.
Not feeling up to making my own dough as she did, I bought some pizza dough at the store and cut that into thirds. I put my leftovers in a skillet along with some spaghetti sauce and Italian spices and cooked it a bit. I then spooned it into the dough pockets, added some cheese, and folded them over.
Easy, right?
Not that they were bad. They just weren't good. Very bland and just a bit odd tasting. After thinking that I was becoming a wonderfully carefree cook, this was a wake-up call.
Back to the recipes for me. Maybe we should have our calzones at restaurants. At least for a little while.
